Authentic Movement
Explore the Depth of Mystery Through Movement
and Reclaim Your Embodied Freedom.
Do you feel cut off from your source of vitality and creativity?
Are you struggling with finding the inner clarity and guidance to help you make important life decisions?
Are you craving depth and authenticity in your relationships with others?
Do you want to finally understand and shift certain repeating patterns in your life?
You are not alone.
It is no news that our fast-paced society aims at actively promoting disconnection between our minds and bodies, between our natural rhythms and the incessant demands for productivity. In a society that values hard-work martyrdom, quantity-over-quality, and social media personas, prioritizing embodiment and a creative life is often seen as a luxury.
But distancing yourself from the body and its intelligence can result in decreased mental health and physical well-being, feelings of stagnation, depression, and alienation, and profound challenges in connecting meaningfully with others.
When we are disconnected from our core-self, we do not know who we are and what we want.
It can be especially hard to tap into the present moment, making it challenging to nourish our soul, pursue creative inspirations, and connect meaningfully with others.
However, just because you haven't listened to your own inner wisdom in a while, it doesn't mean that it has gone away. Aliveness and a sense of purpose arise when the mind is tuned in to our natural impulses and we aren't forced into ineffectual habitual patterns.
Authentic Movement provides a non-judgmental container in which you can reconnect with your body, explore and integrate challenging emotions, and connect with others from your authentic self.
What is Authentic Movement?
Authentic Movement (AM) is a body-centered practice rooted in Jungian Depth Psychology and Dance/Movement therapy. Simply put, it is a contemplative practice of self-directed movement, oriented towards an inward focus, and in the presence of a witness.
While movement has been utilized as a form of psycho-spiritual healing and transformation since the beginning of civilization, Authentic Movement was formalized in the 1950s by dance therapist and Jungian student Mary Starks Whitehouse. The practice has evolved over the years and has been refined and adapted by many practitioners around the world.
The Mover(s) explores spontaneous gestures, movements, sounds, and stillness. As they follow impulses in the present moment they often experience a thinning of the veil between Conscious and Unconscious mind which allows for deep self-exploration.
The Witness is an active observer, holding a safe container for the experience of the Mover. The Witness’ focuses on self-awareness and tracking her own inner responses to the Mover from a space of non-judgmental acceptance and deep honoring.
Although a primarily body-centered practice, Authentic Movement also involves transition times for writing and/or art-making, the opportunity to share your experience and be seen clearly by a Witness, and eventually, the ability to practice being fully present and offering Witnessing to others.
